For more than two decades, this magnificent pipe organ has been under repair. Over the years, critical issues were addressed, and targeted repairs were made to help keep the organ functioning. However, it is now only 30% functional.
The organ is a four manual, fifty-six rank instrument built by the Austin Organ company in 1910. The mahogany case is from the previous organ, a Hook & Hastings of 1886. Some of the pipes in the present instrument are from this original organ.
During the major church renovations in the 1960s, a new console was installed, much of the disposition of the organ was altered, and new stops added. The console, originally in the balcony, was moved to the floor of the sanctuary in 1976.
An assessment of the church’s organ was conducted in 2021, recommending: A new modern organ console to be built using proven, reliable, traditional mechanisms and wiring. The pipes to be cleaned, restored, and provided with new tuning sleeves as part of the process of their reincorporation into the new five-manual instrument. The main mechanisms for delivering wind to the pipes, the windchests, to be replaced with modern mechanisms.
Throughout its history, this pipe organ has symbolized the transcendence of the divine. The powerful and resonant colors elevate congregational singing, provide a backdrop for moments of reflection, and inspire awe through its sonic grandeur.
